چکیده

Abstract Aim Periprosthetic femur fractures (PFF) are becoming increasingly frequent due to an ageing population and growing number of arthroplasties. PFF revision surgery is associated with significant peri-operative blood loss higher transfusion requirements. There few strategies reduce rates transfusion. One which the use cell-salvage. The aim this study was determine whether cell salvage should be routinely implemented during surgeries. Method All admission were retrospectively reviewed over a period 18 months. Data points including patient demographics, admission/operation dates, fracture site, anticoagulation status, pre/post-op Hb transfusions collected. Results total 38 PFF. Average age 83.4 years 11.65g/dl. Mean time for operation 2.9 days. 56% hip replacement received post-operatively average 2.6 units per patient. 100% knee post-operative 1.6 Of note there no increased requirements on (Warfarin/DOAC). Conclusions We identified that >50% required post-op cost 1 unit RBC locally found £145.99. filter £100 Considering above well-known risk allogenic red transfusion, it concluded routine could cheaper safer alternative

Management of periprosthetic fractures of the femur

Periprosthetic fractures occur around the tip of the prosthesis in approximately 0.1% to 2.5% of all hip replacements [1]. Although this is only a very small percentage, it is still significant due to the large number of hip procedures undertaken each year and is certain to increase because of the ageing population. When the prosthesis is not loose, the condition is difficult to treat because o...

Our experiences with the treatment of periprosthetic fractures of femur.

In the statement authors want to draw attention to the possibilities of treatment of periprosthetic fractures of femur. They present their own experiences with the treatment of these fractures by using various types of internal and external fixation evaluated from 1996 to 2003. They present some less common types of internal fixation as e.g. fixation by clamp plates.

Treatment of distal femur fractures with locking plates: Comparison of periprosthetic fractures above total knee arthroplasty and non-periprosthetic fractures.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the results and plate fit of periprosthetic and non-periprosthetic distal femur fractures fixed with locking plates. Twenty-one periprosthetic fractures above a TKA and 27 non-periprosthetic fractures were retrospectively reviewed. The primary healing rate, bone union time, clinical and radiographic results, complications, and additional surgeries...
